While a few members arrived at Panorama Campsite on Wednesday & Thursday, the majority arrived during the day on Friday. We were 29 vehicles for the weekend and it was great to see so many faces we have not seen for a while and there was much socialising at various camps while members were setting up, with Friday evening being a very social affair around the fires.
We had 20 club members (12 vehicles) gather at the Kromrivier (Riviersonderend 4×4) campsite at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains the weekend of 13-15 November.
The campsites (we all shared one huge site) offer plenty of shade, and are situated near a farm dam and we had a small river running through the woods behind us. To Andy’s delight there was a huge supply of black wattle stumps (the farmer is busy clearing the river of black wattle trees) near the campsite. These were used to build huge campfires both nights, it got so hot that we could hardly get coals from under the burning logs. Plans were discussed to bring long or telescopic shovels for future “Andy” campfires! About 100 meters from our campsite was the ablution facilities: a number of donkey stoked showers (these worked very well) and some flushing toilets.
Friday evening was as usual the social “kuier” and braai around the campfire. Saturday morning after a relaxed start, some of the group drove some way into the 4×4 route and did a circular hike in the mountains where they saw beautiful flowers, trees and a small waterfall. Some of us went mountain biking, but after trying the first climbs on the 4×4 route we turned around and did a circular route via the farmhouse to the campsite for an easy +-19 km loop. Rob fired up his trails motorbike and explored some of the farm tracks.
John Little arrived around lunchtime (he had some work commitments to attend to) and brought his pet baby owl along. This little creature fascinated us all and quite a few of our female members wanted to “mother” it!
Saturday evening we had a campfire that could have put some volcanoes to shame as far as heat is concerned! I got my face burned red from the intense heat in trying to shovel some coals out! Again the evening was a great social get together and by 11 pm everybody was off to bed for a well deserved rest.
Sunday morning some of the group started packing after a leisurely breakfast. Sanette and I did another ride on our mtb’s and Rob did some more exploring on his trails bike. After lunch the last Sanette, I and Rob packed up and headed home. We enjoyed the weekend and hope the rest of the group did too. Kromrivier (Riviersonderend) campsite turned out to be a great camping destination not to far from Cape Town.
Regards and see you when we camp again. Jurie and Sanette
Third time lucky. The Gemsbokfontein outing over Easter was cancelled due to lockdown, rescheduled for the end of August but postponed in favour of a Richtersveld trip once provincial borders opened (a good move judging by the weather then!) and finally moved out by 2 days due to the wild weather we had last week. Interestingly, through all this the same members were wanting to go all of the time!
It was a very early Friday morning when Andy and I left Cape Town en route to Steinkopf to meet up with Ken & Shona Sturgeon, Rob Hall, Jurie Schuurman & Sanet, John and James Little and Susan Skog (travelling in John Little’s vehicle) for our Northern Cape / Richtersveld adventure. It was lovely to see everyone!
Andy and I left Cape Town en route to the meeting spot with sunny skies and a slight berg wind blowing, indicating cooler weather to make landfall in Cape Town during the coming week. However, our focus was not on the weather but on the day’s outing and we were excited to be out and about once more with other club members exploring some of the Caledon back roads.
Andy and I left home in Cape Town in light rain en route to meet the other day-trippers and I was wondering whether this was such a good idea after all! However, my vision of staying in a warm bed was soon surpassed by the excitement of getting out and getting our wheels dirty (literally!) after months spent in lockdown!
Another wonderful weekend at this rustic but stunning site. We decided very late to join the trip to Bakenskloof and in retrospect it was a good decision.
A beautiful summer’s day in Grabouw saw 10 vehicles and their eager occupants meeting at the Grabouw Country Club for a day of fun on the 4×4 trail!
Once the admin issues had been taken care of and the tyres deflated, we all enthusiastically set off, with Andy leading the troupe, into the beautiful countryside with the dam setting the backdrop to our day’s adventure.
We had a pleasant drive to Piketberg area, before you reach a sandy road towards your campsite. Gilbert had already taken over the campsite and pool!
Campsites are spread among the trees but if sand is not your thing, there is only grass around the pool area. Everyone spent more time in the pool than anywhere else as temperatures soured to the mid-40s on Saturday.
