Etosha Pan + Damaraland + Brandberg to Rehoboth bush camp via Swakopmund. This part of our journey was the section we looked forward to the most and did not disappoint us! Once again Ivan Napoleon travelled up to meet us at Gerus campsite, South of Etosha Anderson Gate, this time travelling alone. Our early drive from Gerus brought us to Okaukuejo camp, where elephant and rhino were present at the fantastic camp waterhole. We settled in to a much improved campsite, with daily game drives followed by lengthy viewing around the waterhole. The 3rd day had 41 elephants at one time, followed by 5 rhino. Good value!

SECTION 4: WESTERN DELTA TO ETOSHA R.V.
We had 6 weeks to fill and our objectives were to wild camp up the route, explore the Botswana-Eastern side of the river, to research river camping along the Kavango River to and around Rundu, and to seek wild and farm camps en route to Etosha.

As previously announced, we are undertaking a single continuous journey lasting 7 months, travelling anti-clockwise around RSA, Botswana, Namibia and back down the West Coast. John & Lana Zulch are initially travelling up the East Coast at their own speed, to meet us for Section 1 of our Club trip program through Wild Coast, and we both departed Cape Town on 15th January. It was great to meet up with them in Mossel Bay for a celebratory drink. They went on up the coast and left their vehicle in East London.

Section 1: At last we arrived at the Club First Stage Wild Coast route RV on Monday 20th February, which was Yellow Sands outside East London. What a great campsite! Tuesday saw John & Lana Zulch arrive, with Dave & Anne Roy arriving Wednesday. Unfortunately Corne` & Erika Smal had cancelled their booking, and were sadly missed.

Next camp was Keurbooms Lagoon Caravan Park, where we had not booked. This is just past Plettenburg Bay, with the turn-off at Old Nicks. First night was away from the lagoon, but fortunately we managed to move to the front for 3 nights. This was amazing, with views from Beacon Island Hotel right up the East Lagoon. A waterfront site is essential there, and many long-stayers book up the best of them! The weather remained variable, with quite a bit of rain.

29 April to 16 May 2022
Our long-awaited Karoo trip kicked off with a few paid-up participants unfortunately having to withdraw. However we were privileged to have very worthy and experienced members, Ivan Napoleon & Greg Bond-Smith, who has been on quite a few of our trips going back many years. Our first stop was Anysberg Nature Reserve campsite via Ouberg Pass, with a cool Karoo wind keeping us wrapped up. The staff & facilities were tops, and we have proud memories of our Club contribution there, with the highly respected late Committee member Philip Sackville-Scott having taken groups to assist with the building of mountain trails there. Wild camping in Nature Reserves is strictly prohibited, which helps to retain the future of these heritage areas.

Last year’s 3-week trip planned for May was cancelled due to the Covid lockdown, and heavy deposits paid by members for Tuli Block were not refunded. However, to use up the credit we arranged this revised 16-day trip to include Tuli. Central Kalahari National Park was added to the up-market destination, as it made the Botswana excursion more viable.
