Jakkalsden weekend trip

11 – 13 November 2022

And so the weekend arrived. Andy McMahon, through the great universal database of information found this newly advertised “off the grid” camping spot called Jakkalsden near Montague. The turnoff to the farm was newly signposted, but the farmer was happy to accompany each arrival to the campsites. There were quite a few onion fields in bloom, what a beautiful sight.

Viv and Mary’s Karoo Trip

29 April to 16 May 2022

Our long-awaited Karoo trip kicked off with a few paid-up participants unfortunately having to withdraw. However we were privileged to have very worthy and experienced members, Ivan Napoleon & Greg Bond-Smith, who has been on quite a few of our trips going back many years. Our first stop was Anysberg Nature Reserve campsite via Ouberg Pass, with a cool Karoo wind keeping us wrapped up. The staff & facilities were tops, and we have proud memories of our Club contribution there, with the highly respected late Committee member Philip Sackville-Scott having taken groups to assist with the building of mountain trails there. Wild camping in Nature Reserves is strictly prohibited, which helps to retain the future of these heritage areas.

Karoo Bugger Around Trip

19 – 17 March 2022

Friday 18 March – Andy suggested that those who could leave on Friday join him and Colleen at Kranskloof campsite, a well-appointed church youth camp in a secluded, grassy kloof above the railway line on the mountain side of the NI above De Doorns. They arrived first followed by Ken, Shona and Rob.  On a short hike up the mountainside the group retrieved some of the camp equipment abandoned by the thieves that had broken into the campsite months earlier. To cool down in the hot afternoon, creative ways were found to get Shona into the cement reservoir!   At nightfall Jurie and Sanette drove in. Although there was a fully equipped kitchen, naturally all preferred to braai for supper.

Eastern Cape Trip

12 – 27 February 2022

Day 1 – Saturday 12th Feb.

  • Early risers from Cape Town arrived in Heidelberg a little later than anticipated! 6 of us were already there having spent a night in a comfortable guesthouse.
  • From Heidelberg up the Gymanshoek Pass which was sadly gutted by fire, some still burning high up, sad to see much devastation.
  • Next pass Uitspan, where at the Gouritz River crossing a few guys managed a very welcome swim, the temperature showing 40 degrees.
  • Dave had a few problems with a pipe popping off but managed to fix it eventually.
  • The camp at Minwater lived up to its name.

Christmas Weekend Trip

26 – 28 November 2021

What a super bunch of members who attended the Christmas weekend at the lush and grassy green Leeuwenboschfontein campsite near Touwsrivier! Even the weather threats of lots of rain forecast for the weekend couldn’t keep the members away from what turned out to be a lovely weekend – there was some light rain about 6pm and some rain overnight after everyone had gone to bed but not enough to dampen anyone’s spirits!  Friday evening everyone socialised and kept warm in and next to the lapa with big fires being fed by Andy and Hilton!
