Christmas Weekend Trip

26 – 28 November 2021

What a super bunch of members who attended the Christmas weekend at the lush and grassy green Leeuwenboschfontein campsite near Touwsrivier! Even the weather threats of lots of rain forecast for the weekend couldn’t keep the members away from what turned out to be a lovely weekend – there was some light rain about 6pm and some rain overnight after everyone had gone to bed but not enough to dampen anyone’s spirits!  Friday evening everyone socialised and kept warm in and next to the lapa with big fires being fed by Andy and Hilton!

Northern Cape / Richtersveld

17 September to 3 October 2021

Our adventure started in Van Rhynsdorp where we met the rest of the team. Mostly strangers, they all became like family by the end of the trip. Our expert leaders, Andy and Colleen had planned an exceptional trip. Andy, the Google Earth fundi, found tracks that were very less travelled and our adventure began. From Van Rhynsdorp we travelled to Garies where we met our intrepid guides Norman and Bob. With our guides we travelled into the Namaqua community area and to the top of the Kamiesberg – our highest point at Leliefontein. Norman, an expert on the area, had a wealth of knowledge on the history and politics of the area and showed us the beautiful side of patches of stunning flowers that were still in bloom in the higher areas and the more dismal side of barren areas due to overgrazing.

Kareedoringkraal (aka Spitzkop)

2 – 5 April 2021

The 4×4 Off-Road Adventure Club Easter outing group met in De Doorns early on Good Friday morning, and Andy led the convoy of six vehicles north on the N1. En route we visited the Matjiesfontein cemetery, which is in the veld 10 kilometres before that settlement. On the side of the koppie at the cemetery, there is an enormous monument to Major General Wauchope. This hero of various wars in the colonies, was killed at the battle of Magersfontein in 1899, the beginning of the South African War. There are also graves of other British soldiers that perished in the same war, as well as the graves of generations of the Logan family, the Lairds of Matjiesfontein.

Matjieskloof extended long weekend

20 – 24 March 2021

We ended up with 11 vehicles partaking in this Tankwa Karoo excursion, with an incredible selection of vehicle types on display for the journey ahead. Most people left Cape Town on the Friday, to overnight in or near the meeting spot, Travellers Rest, just behind Clanwilliam, at 10h00 on the Saturday. Some of us departed Cape Town and surrounds early Saturday morning to make sure of reaching the designated meeting venue on time. Nobody was late and we all deflated tyres to roughly 1.5 bar to cope with the rough terrain over the next few days.

Boegoeberg weekend outing

26 – 28 February 2021

An easy drive out of Cape Town but the traffic can get busy from 3pm so either go a day before or leave midday.

Our group had our own camp areas with lovely grass areas and some shade which was needed. Temperature was in the high 30s and the pool was a big relief at times. The pool water comes from nearby fountains and gets circulated. The cold beers in the tuckshop were another treat.

Valentine’s Weekend Outing

13 – 14 February, 2021

This was a weekend with a difference, in that the weekend was spent on the fascinating farm of club member, Laurence Green, high up in the mountains overlooking the Tankwa Karoo. The group included Laurence and Mandy, their daughter Courtney, their son Cameron in his Land Cruiser, Dieter and Liechen (Dieter having fixed his Landy after the last outing!), Rob Hall, Ivan and Anita, Ken and Shona and of course, Andy and Colleen. The latter couple only caught up with the group in Ceres, having to double back home to collect the bedding they had left behind – much to the amusement of the rest of us.
